Mike Burghout is the 2018 Outstanding Award winner for mboRijnland. In a packed and warm theater in Alphen aan den Rijn, he emerged victorious from five nominees on Wednesday evening. The Smart Technology student from Gouda made a splash with his dream of helping people with smart innovations. "Mikey, mikey," a loud chant echoed from the audience at the announcement. "I'm incredibly honored to be an Outstanding Award winner, and I'm going to do my best to be a fantastic ambassador for vocational education," said the winner. Shelly Sterk hosted the celebratory evening.
During the annual Outstanding Awards of mboRijnland, Groene Hart Hospital was chosen as the training company of the year. Jeroen Mulder and Jolanda Schilt The hospital's staff are passionate about bringing out the best in students: "Interns are the new employees of the future. What could be better than giving young people the opportunity to truly learn in practice?" This year is particularly special for Groene Hart Hospital, as no fewer than two teams of teachers nominated the hospital. Other nominated training companies include Zamensterk, Heineken Nederland, Competa BV, and Zuiver restaurant.
Hospitality teacher Peter Berkhout teacher of the year
Peter wants to know where his students are, texts them, and calls them (and their parents) when necessary. "I want to give students the tools they need to function well. Teach them the tricks of the trade: hospitality in the broadest sense of the word." It's no wonder his students nominated him. His commitment and expertise led the jury to choose Peter as Teacher of the Year 2018. The teachers, José Boekestijn (healthcare) and Corné van Pelt (Economy) were also nominated by their students.
National Student Standout
Outliers are vocational students who distinguish themselves from their peers by going the extra mile during their studies or internships. Jessie Bos was the Outlier in 2017, and she will mentor the 2018 winner next year. The 2018 Student Outlier will represent mboRijnland at the national Ambassadors' Gala of the MBO Council. The Outliers election is part of "This is MBO" and is organized by the MBO Council. With the "This is MBO" campaign, students, teachers, and staff from the vocational education sector clarify what vocational education is and the importance of vocational education and craftsmanship to our society.
